Watch steam engine 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe pass the Tally Ho today, hauling One-Zulu-48. This trip is celebrating the 50th anniversary of 7029 Clun Castle’s record breaking run from Plymouth to Bristol.
Swindon Works built 171 Collett designed 4073 Castle Class locomotives between 1923 and 1950; they quickly proved themselves to be the GWR and BR(W)’s front line express passenger locomotives for over 40 years.
In May 1964, BR’s Western Region management organised, in conjunction with Ian Allan Railtours, an extensive railtour from Paddington to Plymouth and return as a final farewell to the Castles. The tour named the “Great Western” was designed to feature four handpicked Castles hauling the train over four legs of the journey.
We estimate that Earl of Mount Edgcumbe will be passing the Tally Ho northwards (towards Newton Abbot) at about 3.40pm.
